My name is Ann L. P. Steely and I am a clinical social worker and owner of Heartland Psychotherapy. I specialize in working with adolescents/adults in individual and family therapy. My focus in therapy is on my relationship with you, understanding what you need as an individual, and using this understanding to help you find insight into how to make the changes you want to make in your life. Psychotherapy is a process of working together towards healing and change. I will help you understand yourself authentically and find greater ease through the exploration of your emotional experience, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. I treat all major mental health conditions and specialize in working with other mental health and health professionals as well as individuals wanting support around disordered eating, compulsions, problematic substance use, and challenges related to a loved one's substance use. My practice is affirming all genders/sexualities and racial/cultural identities. I use an integrated psychoanalytic, emotion-focused, and somatic approach to therapy, which focuses on exploring your thoughts, feelings, senses, and behaviors so you can feel more confident, less confused, and more satisfied in your life. This exploration along with the therapy relationship itself leads to increased wellness and recovery from traumas.

We each have unique experiences, personal strengths and challenges that shape how we move throughout the world. Whether recognized or not by others, those of us who live them know the truth; our experiences as racial, sexual, gender or ethnic minorities impact many aspects of our existence. Similarly, individuals who live with seen and unseen disabilities, as well as personal trauma, utilize quiet resilience to cope with challenges that remain invisible to others. Sometimes practical problem -solving contributes to change. Other times, the realities of life cannot be altered, they must be walked through courageously and presently. I bring significant experience supporting teens with special needs and learning differences. I enjoy partnering with young people to brave through the developmental challenges of their teenage and young adulthood years. Additionally, my work in educational equity has contributed to a passion for providing a safe space in therapy for people of color. Whatever your daily challenges, silent struggles and unseen battles, I am committed to walking with you through life's journey. I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to assist you as you become your best self. Although my focus is on supporting POC in therapy, I am thrilled to welcome anyone ready to take their first courageous steps towards change.

Everyone goes through times in life that are overwhelming and you have good reason to feel the way you do. The good news is you don’t have to endure things alone. I believe (and research supports) that counseling helps us find new ways of navigating painful experiences. People find counseling to be helpful for a variety of reasons: having space to process confusing emotions, feeling understood and supported, learning new ways of coping, and engaging in a trusting and therapeutic relationship. My areas of interest and specialty include: general mental health, depression & anxiety, trauma, interpersonal relationships & family of origin, multicultural & identity concerns, LGBTQIA+ issues, emotional development & resiliency. My approach is empathic, non-judgmental, and collaborative and I believe strongly in your ability to enact change. I bring a supportive yet challenging style to help you grow and I would welcome the opportunity to work with you.

I use EMDR and integrative-psychodynamic therapy to tailor your therapy to you. My goal is to help you identify and address your problems at their roots, not just relieve the symptoms. I don't push pills or teach coping skills because white-knuckling your way through life is no way to live. People seek therapy because they have experienced pain, so when we can identify your painful experiences that relate to what is bothering you now, we can change your life. It's important you feel safe and deeply understood in your therapy, so that you can drop your guard and take an honest look at yourself and your life. I view peoples' problems through the lens of "trauma," i.e., the experiences you've had that forever changed you. Trauma can be overt (abuse, combat, etc.) or subtle (feeling invisible/unloved) and its effects can vary, e.g., depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, PTSD, etc. When we identify your core trauma, we can begin healing and changing your life. I believe that in good therapy you break a sweat. It's a place where you're safe enough to cry your heart out and yet you trust the therapist enough to be called out when you're not being honest with yourself. I try to be a real, normal, down-to-earth person who will support you when you're in pain and help you face the stuff that's tough.

Many of us feel like there are pieces missing from our lives. You might have experienced a loss, be going through a major transition, or simply be seeking meaning in a life that is just not quite what you expected it to be. Wanting support through these types of experiences makes sense, and you don’t have to do this alone. It would be an honor to collaborate with you. You are the expert on your life, and my role in the therapeutic relationship will be to help you awaken yourself to the wisdom you already possess. I enjoy working with teenagers and adults, with a focus on using art therapy, mindfulness, and symbolic/ritual work to help clients reduce anxiety, cope with change, grow self love, and structure enriching and dynamic self care and internal exploration practices. This work happens through exploring childhood experiences and learning concrete coping skills. An important element to my practice is in developing authentic and comfortable relationships with my clients. I want our work together to feel collaborative and enjoyable - even in the midst of having tough conversations or facing difficult feelings. Therapy is a safe space. NOT Accepting New Clients/Waitlist Clients at this Time: I will bring curiosity, humor, honesty, and genuine empathy to any person, couple, or family who want to create something different in their life. I am a relational/systemic therapist, which means I believe people are influenced and shaped by the world, and culture(s), around them. I approach this work from a social justice lens, and love working with people who are ready to address the many variables that impact their feelings, patterns, and responses. I specialize in serving individuals, couples, and families with struggles complicated by trauma, challenging upbringings, and/or chemical use issues. I’m a nerd/weirdo who enjoys working with folx who may also feel, or have felt, like they don’t fit into the world around them. I use lots of analogies that can make the therapy process easier to understand. I try to bring humanity to the therapy process. I believe there are no taboo topics. I don’t shy away from hard conversations, and I welcome ALL the feelings. I pride myself on bringing curiosity, humor, honesty (and probably a few four-letter words) to sessions. I will offer my deep enthusiasm and care to anyone looking to make a change in their life.

I am a licensed psychologist with advanced training in sex therapy and gender health. I specialize in compulsive sexual behavior (or "sex addiction"). Many people have concerns about their sexual health, relationships, and mental health. These concerns often impact people’s emotions, work, pleasure, and overall wellbeing. In treatment, I build collaborative, supportive therapeutic relationships and use evidence-based, affirming, and sex-positive interventions. I am passionate about supporting people to live authentically, enhance their relationships, and enrich their wellbeing. I am fortunate to work with a great team of sexual and gender health experts. We help with a range of sexual and gender health needs. I personally have availability for concerns about compulsive sexual behavior (CSB). For CSB, we recommend combined group, individual, and partners (if applicable) therapy with me or one of my colleagues. While I (or my colleagues) have availability for CSB issues, we also help with a range of sexual and gender health needs. I know asking for support is an important step in your care that can often feel vulnerable. I aim to nurture, validate, and encourage you and changes you hope to make. I look forward to exploring your goals and helping plan your care.

I work with people from adolescents to older adults. I have experience working with issues such as: depression, anxiety, self-esteem, eating disorders, life stress, parenting, and marital issues. I think the relationship between a therapist and their client is the biggest indicator of success, therefore, I focus on building a strong rapport with my clients, making sure the client knows they are supported and validated. I am here to walk this journey with you, to be a guide and a support. This is your therapy, and so my focus is on what you need and want and not my agenda. I hope that you will feel heard and respected. I use a variety of techniques including Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Client Centered Therapy, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, and Post Induction Therapy for trauma and relationship issues. The premise of Post Induction Therapy is that childhood trauma (defined as anything less than nurturing) is the origin of developmental immaturity. I am very passionate about what I do. I have been trained for the past few years on a specific practice that is very helpful for adults that are struggling in their relationships with others and with themselves, to treat the effects of childhood trauma.

Whether you’re a nature lover or nature avoider, love to move your body or can’t stand to break a sweat, this therapy is for you. With today’s stressors, we all need nature more than ever. Take your therapy outdoors and gain the benefits of moving your eyes off the screen, engaging your senses, and really feeling your body in nature...all while addressing your personal goals. I use traditional and nature-based therapeutic techniques to support your healing. Issues addressed may include: depression, anxiety, fear of exercising outdoors, trauma recovery, climate distress, gender identity, relationship concerns, sexuality, identity development, chronic illness, and life transitions.
